For those who are just beginning your career in IT, leave out the non-IT roles you’ve work. No-one needs to see that you’ve worked at Woolworths or KFC, they would rather see what you can do now. So instead, go into detail about personal projects and achievements (within IT) that can highlight what you can do. E.g. have you built a program from scratch? If so, what languages did you use? Were you successful? Can you showcase your work through a link or screenshot your work?

2. Highlight your coding proficiency

Emphasise your expertise in programming languages relevant to the job you’re applying for. Whether it’s .NET, Python, React or other, make sure to showcase your skills you are proficient at. Include a section that highlights your best projects, preferably ones that demonstrate your ability to solve real-world problems or showcase your creativity and innovation. If you have experience with Agile, Scrum, or other development methodologies, mention it. Highlight your ability to work in iterative cycles, collaborate with teams, and deliver results efficiently.

3. Highlight your team, but focus on what you have contributed

When discussing your team in a resume, its great to know how many developers or IT professionals you work next to. Highlight this briefly but the more important factor here is when talking about your projects talk about how you contributed to the project and how you supported your colleagues to achieve targets and goals (if applicable). Example. If there are 5 developers, you work next to and are building a brand-new Greenfield project try; “I was working alongside 5 developers on a brand-new Greenfield project. My contribution was focused on the ‘x’ on the back end, which I completed in ‘x’ time.” This can then highlight what you did, rather than the team.

4. Include certifications and training

List any relevant certifications, training programs, or professional development courses you’ve completed. This helps to demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and skill development. If you have a portfolio or active GitHub account, make sure you list the links in your IT resume.

5. Include a technical skill section

Create a separate section at the top of your resume for listing your key technical skills. This is essential for effectively communicating your qualifications to potential employers. Organise these by category (e.g. programming languages, operating systems, databases). By consolidating your technical expertise in one organised section, you provide clarity and relevance, making it easier for employers to quickly assess your suitability for the job. Instead, opting for the phrase “References available upon request” can be a more secure and professional approach. This practice respects the privacy of your referees by not disclosing their contact information unnecessarily and ensures that they are only contacted by serious potential employers who have expressed a clear interest in your application. It also gives you the opportunity to brief your referees about the position and the qualities the employer is looking for, ensuring they are well-prepared to provide relevant and supportive feedback about your skills and experiences.

Additionally, you may have different referees for different roles. If you are applying for a senior developer position, you will want someone who can speak your technical abilities but if you are applying for a team lead role, you’ll want someone to speak on your management and leadership abilities.

7. Ensure readability and clarity

Just like with the general resume, make sure your IT resume is easy to read and well-organised. Use clear headings, bullet points, and concise language to convey your qualifications and experiences effectively. There is nothing worse than reading a resume and trying to find where someone has written the company name. In addition to this, always add in the months you were at each company – this makes a big impact. As by putting 2022-2023, this leaves your working history wide open for interpretation. You may have been there 1 month or 2 years, its hard to know without further research.

List your work experience and education in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent. This format makes it easier for employers to see your most recent and relevant experience first without searching pages to find it.

8. Attention to detail: proofreading and format

Attention to detail is critical in a resume because it serves as your first impression to potential employers. A well-crafted resume free of typos, grammatical errors, and formatting inconsistencies demonstrates your ability to communicate effectively and showcases your commitment to quality.
